The German U-boats were a sight like non other that I had seen before. The large warships operated in packs, destroying their enemies (“Battle of the Atlantic” 1). The U-boats were being produced at an astonishing rate of thirty each month (“Battle” 1). Like my brothers and friends hadn’t suffered enough from the attack of Pearl Harbor, Hitler organized raids on America’s coast through submarine work (Danzer et. al. 570). The Germans came in with the goal to prevent food and war materials from getting from our land to Great Britain and the Soviet Union (Danzer et. al 570). This wasn’t going to be an easy task, because Germans had four hundred U-boats ready to go at the drop of a hat (“Battle” 1). But he knew cutting this lifeline, would surely lead to Hitler’s victory in World War II, because we were the suppliers to Great Britain and the Union (Danzer et. al 570). A turning point in this battle was our rapid production response to all the damage the Germans had done, and production of thousands of ships on every front. This new number was something the Germans couldn’t handle (“Battle” 1). My men and I refused to let this happen, after organizing into convoys we added sonar detection to the head of our pack to detect submarines. Also, we brought along fighter planes to use radar for the detection on U-boats (Danzer et. al 570). The tide had turned for our men in 1943, and Winston Churchill said that June “was the best month (at sea) from every point of view we have ever known in the whole forty-six months of the war” (Danzer et. al 570).
I am now one leg less, but I lost it with pride in fighting for our country against defeating Hitler. This right there, is enough for me.
